A not-so-imaginary friend
Megan is the daughter of two druids, and she lived with her mother in a druidic commune until she was nine. During her time at the commune, she befriended what she believed to be a mysterious spirit. Witnesses to any of their interactions dismissed them as a child with an imaginary friend. The spirit taught the young girl fighting and magical skills no one would have imagined such a young girl could learn. However, her behavior and inexplicable antics were a big worry for her mother.
Megan’s father, Bilin, is a combat instructor at Somatica, one of the Academy colleges. When he returns to the commune to pay Megan a visit, Megan’s mother confides in him about her concerns. An eavesdropping Megan overhears the conversation and runs away, feeling betrayed. Bilin finds her before long and persuades her to return home, but the damage has been done. Megan’s secret is out, and the leaders of the commune now wish to ask Megan about her advanced fighting skills and odd magical abilities. Their meeting with Megan goes horribly wrong, and an outraged Bilin decides to take his daughter back to the Academy with him. With her secret exposed and interpreting her mother’s concern as repulsion, Megan eagerly leaves the commune with her father.
A dragon in tutor's clothing
Unlike the other main characters, Jania’s early childhood was relatively peaceful and happy, but still far from normal. The only child of the King and Queen of Syntrea, Jania holds the title of Princess-Heir. Destined to rule a powerful nation, she is also blessed with spellcasting powers. Fated to become one of the most powerful monarchs ever, expectations are high for the princess, and she is keenly aware of this. Her days are filled with all manner of lessons and training. In addition to her standard schooling, Jania is tutored by a trusted Syntrean official, Animis. Jania is very close to her tutor, but Animis holds a secret that very few know. And the things he is teaching the young Syntrean heir are best kept unspoken.
Galen is introduced along with her brother Ben at her home in Stony Forest, a collection of groves, copses and villages just off a cliffside coast at the shore of Syntrea. During an outing with her older brother, she discovers an enemy army encamped not far from her village. When she returns to the village with her news, her father goes to investigate and establish some kind of contact, but is killed. The army razes her village to the ground and take Galen, Ben and a few other children captive. En route to the commander’s camp, Ben helps Galen escape by pushing her out of a caged wagon. The little girl, alone and orphaned, makes her way back to her village, battling giant lizards and discovering certain things she can do to defend herself. Making her way through the corpses, she equips herself and sets out to find her brother, using both mundane and magical skills to slay every enemy soldier she encounters. Eventually she is discovered by one of the dragons roaming her world. He cares for the young girl and helps her search for her brother, but before she can find Ben, she is captured by the commander of the invading army. What happens next remains a mystery to all except the dragons.
